On my first road trip to Alaska in 1974, seeking my fortune building the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline, I camped on the edge of this riverbank on the Smith River on my second night traveling north on the Alcan.
The river's swollen spring currents roared loudly throughout that night and my cat Atlas fell prey to a beast of the wild when he ventured out of our tent in the pre-dawn hours. |
